Prs Serial Number Handwritten
Paul Reed Smith began making top-of-the-line guitars in Maryland in 1985. At the time of publication, the guitars are being made in the United States and South Korea. To properly identify a model, locate the model number and determine which country the guitar was made in. The information for making this determination is contained on the front and rear sides of the guitar headstock, and in the serial number.
Home > All Guitars > Paul Reed Smith (PRS). This Is A Very Simple Formula. PRS serial numbers are very easy to figure out. The only slightly confusing thing is. 1985 guitars start with the same number as a 1995 guitar. 1986 guitars start with the same number as a 1996 guitar 1987 guitars start with the same number as a 1997 guitar etc.
One exception is the signature models, such as the Santana I and Santana II guitars. In addition to model numbers these guitars have artwork on the fretboard showing a soaring bird. Determine the Model and Country of Origin Examine the front of the headstock for the model number, which appears there in large letters. This identifies the model of the guitar. Look for the word 'Korea' on the front and on the back side of the headstock.
If it appears on either side, the guitar is a South Korean-made model. Examine the serial number on the back of the headstock for the letter K. The K indicates that the guitar is a South Korean-made model. Determine whether the serial number is handwritten or is a graphic reproduction.
A handwritten serial number indicates that the guitar was made in the United States.
There's a Taylor 510 at the local pawn shop that has a hand written model number and info on the side where the neck meets the body on the inside of the guitar. I couldn't make it out because of horrible lighting and the way it was so out of place, but i could have sworn it started with 88, and it almost looked like it had another 88 after it. Since it was handwritten (but 'Latest model 'on record' to have a label hand-signed by Bob Taylor is #2733.' So go figure) it was hard to decipher. It was in excellent condition, not a mark or scratch on it, and played beautifully. The model number doesn't seem to fit in with the dating scheme on the website, any clues? Perhaps I'm just blind and it was a 98, but I could have sworn it was older than that, despite it's excellent condition.
For you North Carolinians, the pawn shop is located in King, NC, about 15 minutes north of Winston-Salem. Veteren, he didn't say that the serial number was 2733, only that he knew from the Taylor website that that number was supposed to be the last regularly handsigned by BT and he thought the Taylor signature looked to be handwritten. What he said was the serial number seemed to start with 88 and then have some numbers and then end with another 88. This doesn't make sense since there is no such serial number in Taylor's numbering system.

It would much more likely be, as he suggested, that the serial number actualy started with 98 which would make it a 1998 model and the signature only looks like it is handwritten. Or, it could be the pawn shop is up to some funny business which isn't beyond the realm of possibility given how so many of them operate.
